Enforce demands

What are the benefits?
When teachers consistently enforce the demands they set, they establish clear boundaries and maintain authority in the classroom. This builds trust and respect between the teacher and students, leading to a more structured and productive learning environment. When students know that expectations are followed through every time, they are more likely to listen and comply, reducing disruptions and increasing engagement.

Why does this matter?
If a teacher gives demands but does not consistently enforce them, students quickly learn that they don’t have to listen. This can lead to a loss of authority, making classroom management more difficult over time. Additionally, when expectations are inconsistently enforced, students may feel frustrated or confused about what is truly required of them. To be effective, teachers must ensure that any demand they give is actually enforceable and follow through every time.

What does this look like?

  • During a Lesson: Mr. Johnson tells his class, “If you talk while I’m giving directions, you will lose participation points.” When a student begins whispering, he calmly follows through by deducting the points and reminding the class of the expectation. Because he consistently enforces his rule, students understand that he means what he says.
  • Lining Up for Lunch: Ms. Carter expects her students to walk quietly in line before heading to the cafeteria. One day, several students begin running to the door. Instead of ignoring it, she immediately stops them and has everyone return to their seats. “We line up when we are ready,” she states firmly. The students quickly correct their behavior, knowing that she will not let expectations slide.
  • Technology Use: Mr. Lee tells his class, “If you are caught using your tablet for anything other than classwork, it will be put away for the rest of the day.” When a student begins playing a game during work time, he enforces the rule and takes the tablet away. Because he consistently follows through, students learn to take his expectations seriously.

By making sure that all demands are clear, enforceable, and consistently followed through, teachers establish authority, promote respect, and create a more structured learning environment.
